Hará cuestión de un par o tres de años, un muy buen amigo mío me dijo: “no se ha hecho nunca música de tanta calidad cómo la que se está cosechando ahora”, y es muy posible que tuviera razón, cosa que no podremos confirmar hasta de aquí unos años.

Lo que sí podemos confirmar es que la segunda mitad de la segunda década de los dosmiles, ha sido, muy posiblemente, la del resurgir del electro, IDM y breaks, dándole también un merecido come back al adyacente jungle y sus derivados.

Intentamos con esta exquisita selección ordenada por Cad, aka CAD73, mítico Dj de los 90 de Barcelona y afincado en Pekín, repasar toda esta oleada de grandes referencias desde el prisma de la Ciudad Condal, la que siempre fielmente ha intentado e intenta representar, ya sea en pequeña o gran escala, lo que ha acontece en grandes festivales y clubs de referencia.

Descorchamos con “Beyond Space” de White Solar Dog, un electro elegante con un bajo de sinte que poco a poco se funde con una melodía meláncolica dando fruto a un enorme tema genialmente estructurado. Seguimos con “Que sí, que no”, de Romero Martin, una de aquellas masterpiece que une los sintes, la caja y el tema de flamenco “Luna Gitana” original de Remedios Amaya, poco más que añadir.

La transición hacia el post-punk manteniendo todavía bajas velocidades, nos obliga a parar en “Mundos Olvidados” de Fledermaus, continuando con una buena línea de bajo y bombo roto que predominan en “She wants to Know” de Amas, donde paulatinamente, tanto la saturación como las vocales te van atrapando hasta dejarte exhausto y casi sin respiración. Broken beat elegante, Karmasaound deleita de una manera magistral con “Fly Away”. El salto hacia el bombo roto y glitches de cirujano lo damos con “Alpha Waves” de Cyberdom. Dando una pequeña vuelta de tuerca nos encontramos con el autobautizado electrobreak de Sntn que, con “Guns & Monkeys”, deja muy claras sus intenciones: el electro puede llegar a sonar muy potente.


Volvemos de nuevo a los sintes y vocoders más macarras de la mano de Gravedad Cinética con su “Rezuma Ponzoña”. Loops melódicos con cierta base breakbeat que llevan al umbral del más allá del IDM en el remix de Rumbler del tema “Icaro”, original de Mercuri. Sin dejar
los loops y el sampleo, Sistema -pocas presentaciones hacen falta de esta leyenda barcelonesa- se casca un tema bastante warpero, por qué no decirlo, con “Sylvestre Standalone”.

Si alguien del panorama nacional ha defendido a capa y espada el electro, ese es The Zenobit3 -si no conoces el lema No Country For Milikis, muy seguramente te esté perdiendo algo-, cosa que podrás comprobar escuchando su “Dangerous Components”. Giramos de
nuevo, y volvemos de Madrid a Barcelona, Carlos Sicrock se casca con “Tressic” un maravilloso track de vertiente más IDMera pero bien cargado de línea de bajos y caja 100% electro.

Wachita China, aka de DJ これからの緊急災害, nos sorprende con “DONT PHONK WITH M1 HEART” otro edit lleno de loops y sampleos que acaba convirtiéndose en un auténtico pelotazo transformando de manera total el tema de The Black Eyes Peas. Aterrizamos de
nuevo en el IDM más junglero -si se me permite- con “SW.2” de Seltar, bombazo de breaks que te hará volar la cabesita.

Otro de los artistas ya míticos -aunque bastante joven- de La Ciudad Condal es RNXRX que con su “Heads” demuestra que sabe mezclar a la perfección elementos del electro y el techno industrial. Serkin aka 1985, que no podía faltar en esta gran y moderna etapa, nos brinda un viaje a través de las atmósferas del techno con bombo roto y oscuro con “lifeforce”. Parada bizarra antes del momento final de la mano de Turbolover con su “Klub Kids”, tema que muy seguramente no te dejará indiferente.

Y el broche final lo tenemos con una melodía de lágrima pura, un tema melancólico y totalmente atemporal como es “Estrada” de ETM, que nos sorprende con un sonido poco común en él. El fin de una etapa.

A couple of years ago a friend told me there has never been such high quality as what is coming out right now, and its very possible that my friend is right, although something we’ll only be able to confirm a few years from now.

What we can confirm is that in the second decade of 2000 we have seen the resurgence of electro, IDM and breaks and also the well-deserved come-back of jungle and its derivatives.

With this exquisite selection from CAD, aka CAD73, a mythical DJ from the 90s Barcelona scene, now based in Beijing, we attempt to review a wave of musical references from the city that were prominent in major festivals and clubs at that time.

We uncork this mix with “Beyond Space” by White Solar Dog, an elegant electro track with a synth bass that slowly melds with a melancholic melody giving fruit to a vast, brilliantly structured arrangement. We continue with “Que si, que no”, by Romero Martin, one of thosen masterpieces that unites synths, rhythm machines and the original flamenco song “Luna Gitana” by Remedios Amaya, plus a little more on top. Without abandoning the mix of sounds, led by Siwo, a Mozambican living in La Ciudad Condal, captivates us with “Electric Village”, a perfect fusion between synth and African vocals.

The transition towards post-punk at a steady pace brings us to Fledermaus “Forgotten Worlds”, continuing with a solid bassline and broken bass drum that brings to the fore in Amas's “She wants to Know”, where gradually, sonic saturation envelopes you until you are exhausted and out of breath. With elegant broken beat, Karmasaound delights with a masterful effort in “Fly Away”. The jump towards the broken drum and surgeon glitches with “Alpha Waves” by Cyberdom. Now, add a little twist, and we get a self-made electrobreak, which with “Guns & Monkeys”, makes it very clear: electro can sound very powerful.

We return once again to the most badass synths and vocoders from Gravedad Cinética with “Rezuma Ponzoña”. Melodic loops and a breakbeat base move beyond the realms of IDM in Rumbler's remix of the song “Icaro”, who’s original is by Mercuri. Little introduction is needed for Barcelona legend of loops and sampler, Sistema, who lands with a warp-like track on “Sylvestre Standalone”.

If there is someone from the national scene that has defended electro tooth and nail, then that is The Zenobit3, and if you don't know the track, No Country For Milikis, you are certainly missing out, which you’ll realise when listening to their song “Dangerous Components”. We return to Barcelona, from Madrid with Carlos Sicrock’s “Tressic”, a wonderful track with a more IDM flavour with well-armed with a proper bassline and 100% electro snare Wachita China, aka DJ こ れ か ら の 緊急 災害, surprises us with “DONT PHONK WITH M1 HEART” another edit full of loops and samples that ends up becoming a real banger, tearing apart from the Black Eyes Peas original. We again end up n IDM-Jungle territory with Seltar’s “SW.2” a bombshell of breaks that will make your head fly.

Another of the already mythical artists – although still quite young- from Barcelona is RNXRX who with “HEADS” shows how to perfectly mix elements of electro and industrial techno. Serkin aka 1985, which we could not omit from this great, modern period, offers us a trip through the atmospheres of techno with a broken and dark bass drum on the track, “lifeforce”. Bizarre stop before the final moment at the hands of Turbolover with his "Klub Kids", a tune that will surely not leave you indifferent.

The finale brings a tear of pure melody, a melancholic and timeless theme called “Estrada” by ETM, which surprises us in its rarity of sound and brings us to the end of an era.
