El modesto y hermoso festival Caudorella introduce el título de este tercer volumen, una radiografía breve pero certera de lo que pasó en la ciudad en la primera mitad de la década de los 2010s.

La palabra clave, de todas formas, no es la del principio, si no la del final: “consolidación”. Ya no se puede ni se debe hablar de escena incipiente, de primeros pasos, ni tan siquiera de crecimiento. Esto ya es una realidad, física, palpable, en constante movimiento pero también plenamente establecida.

La variedad sigue siendo la norma: no hay un sonido Barcelona como sí hubo, por ejemplo, un sonido Bristol o uno más o menos identificable con Frankfurt o con Berlín. Lo que define esta última década es la apertura y la mirada amplia, la relajación de la tensión entre clubes, músicos y sellos, el flujo más natural de intercambio y colaboración.

Sigue sin existir una industria como tal (¿la habrá algún día? mal momento ahora para aventurar escenarios de futuro) pero eso no impide que la creatividad surja y se expanda en múltiples direcciones. La leyenda de las cabinas barcelonesas, Dj Gus, ha ordenado los temas de esta compilación.

El breakbeat sigue ahí, vertiente melódico-acid-infeccioso si lo firma Pablo Leon, más lúdico-retro-festivo en manos de Los Patéticos (anónimos combatientes del buen gusto desde las estanterías de Galleta Records); por supuesto también el house, elegante y soulful en el caso de Baldo, hedonista y lisérgico el de Shelby Grey, emocional y brillante el de bRUNA, y acercándose a los breaks de la mano de VCS, nombre vinculado a los primeros años de Discos Paradiso y eterno desconocido de la escena.

También asoma la cabeza el electro, con la joya que brinda de The Bandit (jefe de Electroclub Recordings desde L’Hospitalet) y el techno dub profundo y precioso de Pablo Bolívar con Sistema (vaya par). Atentos también al trío final: Arnau Sala inventando su propio techno industrial con Exoteric Continent; el inigualable Niño de Elche trazando nuevas tangentes para el flamenco con Los Voluble (esos dos conciertos en Sónar pasarán ya a la historia del festival y de la ciudad); y fin de fiesta con drum’n’bass arábigo de Ma Z, uno de las figuras más respetadas de las fiestas okupas y las raves underground de la ciudad.

Caudorella festival, a small and beautiful festival, releases their third compilation which provides a sonic X-ray of the city during the first half of the 2020s.

The key word, however, is not one focusing on its beginnings, but its end: “consolidation”. One can’t speak of a nascent scene, with first steps leading to growth, but scenario of constant momentum and amplification towards its goal.

Variety is the constant, as there isn’t a Barcelona sound, in the same way there was for Bristol, Frankfurt or Berlin. What defines this last decade is its openness and wide gaze, with collaboration across clubs, musicians and labels. Without an established industry (and now not necessarily the best time to start new ventures) this has not prevented creativity spreading in multiple directions.

A legend of many Barcelona DJ booths, DJ Gus is at the controls for this compilation. Breakbeat is still there, in the form of the melodic-acid-infectious track by Pablo Leon, and the more playful-retro-festive style of Los Patéticos (anonymous collective and purveyors of
good taste from Galleta Records). Of course, there is also house music, in the elegant and soulful guise of Baldo; plus the hedonistic and lysergic music of Shelby Gray, and the brilliant, emotional sound of bRUNA; finally approaching the breaks with VCS, a mysterious
name linked to the early years of Discos Paradiso.

Electro also rears its head, with a jewel offered by The Bandit (head of Electroclub Recordings from L’Hospitalet) and the deep and precious dub techno of Pablo Bolívar with Sistema.

Keep an eye on the final trio: Arnau Sala’s take on industrial techno with Exoteric Continent; the incomparable Niño de Elche developing new tangents of flamenco with Los Voluble (whose concerts at Sónar will go down in the festival’s history) and closing the party with Arabic drum n bass by Ma Z, one of the key figures in the city’s squat parties and
underground raves.
